Tariff Turbulence: Lydia Cox Discusses Trump’s Economic Policies on the UW Now Live

A UW economist shares her predictions for the economy under Trump’s tariffs.

Throughout his second term in office, President Donald Trump has rolled out, doubled down, and sometimes backtracked on his tariff policies. Economist Lydia Cox will join the August 5 episode of the UW Now Live to discuss how such policies — and their uncertain nature — will affect prices and the nation’s economic health.

Cox specializes in international trade and macroeconomics. Before joining the UW’s Department of Economics in 2023, Cox earned her undergraduate degree in economics from Stanford and completed her doctorate at Harvard. She is also a faculty research fellow for the National Bureau of Economic Research’s international trade and investment program.

Chief Area of Research:

I study international trade and macroeconomics, with a particular focus on how U.S. trade policy affects the macroeconomy.

On the UW Now Live, I’ll Discuss:

I plan on discussing how the recently imposed tariffs and turbulent tariff policy rollout have affected the economy so far, and what we might expect to see from these policies in the future.

One Thing I’d Like Viewers to Remember Is:

Both the tariffs in effect and the uncertainty surrounding tariff policy are starting to show their effects on things like prices and economic growth, but it will likely take more time to see the effects more fully as the tariffs have been in place for longer and other policies (potentially) go into force.
