William G. Schickert Obituary
William George Schickert ’67, beloved father, grandfather, and friend, passed away on July 2, 2024, after a short battle with cancer. He was 78 years old.
Born in West Bend, Wisconsin, on September 24, 1945, William, known affectionately as Bill, lived a life full of love, dedication, and service. He attended Seminary at St. Francis De Sales from 1959 to 1965 before earning his bachelor of arts degree from the University of Wisconsin in 1967. Bill continued his education at the University of Illinois, where he met the love of his life, Ann Quigley, and earned his master of arts degree in 1968. They became engaged in 1971 and were married on March 27, 1972.
Bill and Ann then moved to Maryland to start their careers. Bill initially worked for the Department of Labor before finding his (eventual) true calling at the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC). He worked in the Division of Information Technology until his retirement in 2005, applying his quiet ‘can-do’ attitude to spread positive energy throughout both his work and personal lives.
Bill was a caring and generous man, known for his avid love of sports and gardening. He was a dedicated and loving father, and an ever-present figure at his kids’ activities; whether as a coach on the field, or a fan on the sidelines or in the audience. It was a rare meal in the Schickert household that didn’t have something on the table that he’d grown in his garden.
True to his firmly held beliefs of giving back to the community, he regularly volunteered for Meals on Wheels and at local food pantries. He also found time to read the Washington Post Sports section for the blind with Metropolitan Washington Ear. Bill faithfully brought communion to his friends unable to attend mass. He was known to help his neighbors and easily made genuine friendships with those in his community – always ready and willing to assist in any way he could. He did so cheerfully, with no expectation of recompense.
Bill never ceased to say how lucky he was to have had 50 years of marriage with his adored wife, Ann, who preceded him in death in 2022.
He is survived by his three children: John (Adrienne), Katherine, and David Schickert (Sarah); grandchildren Scarlett, John Lincoln, Conor, and Maeve Schickert; sister Joan Schickert; brother James Schickert (Dee); sister-in-law Patricia Quigley; brothers-in-law John Quigley (Monica) and Edward Quigley (Elizabeth) and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
