Dr. Francis Wolf, proud alum, passes away

Francis G. Wolf ’70, MD’73 passed away on Saturday, Aug. 10, 2024, with his family by his side after a courageous battle against multiple illnesses. Born on January 27, 1947, in Appleton, WI, Fran lived a life marked by dedication and love.

He graduated from the University of Wisconsin–Madison medical school in 1973. Throughout his distinguished career, he was a pioneer in his field, becoming the first cardiology fellow of the University of Wisconsin at Mount Sinai (Milwaukee), the first president of the Aurora Physician Hospital Organization, and the founder and managing partner of Cardiology at Aurora BayCare Medical System, Green Bay, WI. He also served a term as physician president of BayCare Clinic. Highly respected in the medical community, Fran was known for his exceptional bedside manner and unwavering commitment to his patients.

Outside of his profession, Fran was a devoted family man and a true friend. He cherished the time spent with his large family and close friends, always ready with wise advice, an insightful perspective, and an eternally optimistic outlook on life. Together with his beloved wife, Carmen, Fran found joy in cultivating beauty in their lives, transforming their landscapes into vibrant and tranquil oases. Fran also found joy in simple pleasures – reading, tinkering around the house, and traveling. For 27 years, he and Carmen made annual trips to Catalina Island for the jazz festival, a tradition that became a cherished part of their lives.

Fran’s legacy is one of love, compassion, and resilience. He was preceded in death by his parents, Victor Wolf and Veronica (Schumacher), and his brothers, Jerome (Agnes) and Leander (Carol Ann). He is survived by his sister, Rosie (Leroy) Meles; his beloved wife, Carmen Wolf; his children, Jeffrey (Mary) Mallegni, Kelly (William) Mallegni-Ballogh, Nicholas Wolf, Emily Wolf, Joseph Mallegni, Lizzi Wolf, and Hannah Mallegni; and his grandchildren, Adeline, Jeffrey, Hazel, Ivan, Gypsy, and Alessandra.

Visitation will be held on Friday, Aug. 23, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Zimmer Westview Funeral Home, W2132 Garton Road, Sheboygan, WI. A funeral mass will take place at 10 a.m. on Saturday Aug. 24, at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, 8100 Brunner Road, Newton, WI.
