In 1981 he became associate dean of continuing legal education and outreach at the University of Wisconsin Law School, a position he held until retirement in July 2011. In this position, he taught a variety of programs on criminal law for lawyers, judges, and police officers and the first-year courses in criminal law and criminal procedure, along with supervising the judicial intern program.

In 1976, he started as the reporter for the Wisconsin Criminal Jury Instructions Committee, a position he took great pride in, stepping down in 2019. He continued as an adviser to the committee until his death. Dave was known as a valuable resource for Wisconsin’s judges and a friend to many within the legal community. He authored many books with colleagues throughout his career.
