Diego Marcial Rios, a UW Madison alumnus, has forged a remarkable career as a political artist and educator in the Bay Area. Choosing UW-Madison for its prestigious Fine Arts & Graphics program, Diego graduated with a Masters and MFA degrees in the mid-1980s. He recalls with fondness the influential professors who appreciated his rebellious spirit.
During his time at UW-Madison, Diego called Merritt Hall home for three years. While he hasn't been back to visit, citing his aversion to the weather, he fondly recalls his favorite spots on campus—the Art Department and the art library at Elvehjem.
Diego credits the art department for shaping his success. The art department and his professors gave him a firm grasp of the art world and taught him how to produce art effectively. As a result, Diego's career took off early, with his work being displayed in major museums by his early 20s. His work now is featured in institutions like the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art and the Chazen Museum of Art at UW-Madison. Today, Diego resides in the Bay Area, teaching at the Mission Cultural l Center and engaging in social work in Alameda County.
