Speakers

Dustin Deming MD’07 is a faculty member in the Division of Hematology, Medical Oncology, and Palliative Care. As a clinician, he focuses primarily on medical care of patients living with gastrointestinal cancers, including colorectal cancer and esophageal cancer. He serves as clinical cochair of the UW Carbone Cancer Center (UW CCC) Molecular Tumor Board, director and founder of the UW CCC Colorectal and Anal Cancer Working Group, vice-chair of the Chemotherapy Council, and medical director of the William S. Middleton Memorial Veterans Hospital Oncology Infusion Clinic. As a physician-scientist, Deming’s research program focuses on developing precision medicine treatments for different subtypes of colon cancer. As a medical educator, he provides classroom and clinical instruction to medical students, residents, fellows, and other oncology providers. Deming has been named one of the best doctors in America on multiple occasions.

Mark DeCheck MD’83 is a retired family medicine practitioner. He graduated from UW–Parkside in 1979 with majors in biology, chemistry, and German, and went on to medical school at UW–Madison. DeCheck then returned to the area for his residency through the Aurora-St. Catherine’s Hospital Family Medicine Residency Program, which was based at UW–Parkside. DeCheck spent his career in private practice in Racine. In addition to supporting the health needs of individual patients and families, he is a dedicated leader for the local health community and medical practitioners statewide. DeCheck has been on the Racine County Health Department Board for 25 years. He has been president as well as treasurer of the Racine County Medical Society, and he also served two terms on the State Medical Society Board and remains on the nominating committee. DeCheck is a director at Hospice Alliance and serves on several committees at Wheaton Franciscan Hospital.

Jennifer L. Mnookin is the 30th leader of the University of Wisconsin–Madison in its 177-year history. Under her leadership, the university has been designated as a national center for innovation and economic prosperity and recognized as one of the top institutions in the country for opening doors to opportunity. In 2024, she announced the multifaceted Wisconsin Research, Innovation, and Scholarly Excellence Initiative, designed to strategically position UW–Madison to address some of the world’s grand challenges over the next several years. Mnookin has spent her academic career at top public research universities, including the University of California–Los Angeles and the University of Virginia. She has also been a visiting professor of law at Harvard Law School and holds degrees from Harvard, Yale, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She is one of the nation’s leading legal scholars and an elected member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
