Board of Directors' Leadership Role / Job Description

Drive the strategic thinking and direction of the organization in partnership with WAA's executive leadership and staff
Review and approve Association policy
Oversee the financial viability of the Association and ensure its legal and ethical integrity
Serve as an ambassador of the University and WAA by cultivating and strengthening relationships with campus and community leaders, enhancing the Association's brand and image

Attend meetings of the board of directors (minimum requirement of one per year)
Serve on ad hoc committees or task forces as assigned
Motivate fellow alumni to volunteer on behalf of WAA, UW-Madison, and the UW Foundation
Encourage alumni to support WAA through participation in its programs, services, and support of the endowment
Come prepared for board and committee meetings
Become educated and familiar with WAA's mission, vision, and strategic objectives
Focus on long-term, significant policy issues, rather than short-term operational matters
Annually review the performance of the board, including its composition, organization and role
Provide strategic and thoughtful recommendations to continually improve performance of the board
Bring forward nominations for succession leadership and for volunteers to various advisory groups
Self-evaluate one's performance and satisfaction as a board member
Have an active e-mail account to facilitate electronic communications between meetings and keep the secretary of the board apprised of changes to your contact information and professional biography
Provide mentorship and/or assistance to future students and recent grads
Serve as an advocate for the University and WAA by cultivating and strengthening relationships with campus and community leaders, enhancing the Association's brand and image
Provide candid and constructive criticism, advice, and comments
