Scholarships

This award seeks to recognize students who demonstrate the following:

• A commitment to community involvement through a demonstrated role in civic engagement, public service and volunteerism.
• A drive toward future leadership.
• A proven commitment to advocacy on behalf of the UW and its students, as well as a strong belief in the power of education.
• In addition, a demonstration of financial need will be considered in awarding these scholarships.

Arlie Mucks, Jr., was the former Executive Director of the Wisconsin Alumni Association. Through these scholarships, designed to recognize students who promote UW-Madison spirit, legacy at the University of Wisconsin-Madison continues. Sophomore and junior members of the Wisconsin Singer, the Spirit Squad, the UW Homcoming Committee and the Wisconsin Alumni Student Board are eligible to apply. The application deadline was February 1, 2008.

The John W. Jung Memorial was established following the tragic death of Dr. John W. Jung on August 27, 2006. Friends and family members conceived the Memorial out of a desire to further the values that characterized John’s life while helping others avoid the demons of addiction that led to his death.

The Memorial is organized and housed under the Wisconsin Alumni Association (WAA). This link to the university is indicative of John’s love for UW-Madison and the depth of his connection to the WAA, where as a member and leader of the Wisconsin Alumni Student Board (WASB) he spent one of his most formative years. Through the fund, the memorial seeks to recognize student achievement by providing scholarships and mentorship to incoming students at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

The African American Alumni Association (AAAA) works to recruit, support and retain African-American students at UW-Madison. As a part of the group's mission, members have worked throughout the years to provide support to current and incoming students. Applications are now available and due May 30, 2008.

American Indian alumni recognize the uniqueness of the responsibilities of American Indian students and their financial needs. The scholarships, awarded at a maximum of $500 each semester, are available to those undergraduate, graduate and professional students who best demonstrate unmet financial need; intention or evidence of enrollment; and evidence of membership in, or descendence of, any U.S., state or federally recognized American Indian community.

The AIAC currently awards twenty undergraduate scholarships, as well as ten graduate or professional scholarships. Full-time students who file the Free Application for Student Aid (FAFSA) with the Office of Student Financial Services will be considered. No additional application is required.

The Viking Scholarships are a chain of scholarship programs between the University of Wisconsin and the Nordic countries of Norway, Sweden, Finland and Denmark. Visit their Web site to find out more about the organization and the scholarships offered.

The GLBTAC awards annual scholarships to outstanding students at UW-Madison. The recipients of this award have demonstrated a commitment to the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community, and demonstrate an outstanding academic achievement and a financial need for assistance in paying for their education. Sexual orientation is not a determining factor. Only students who are enrolled at the University of Wisconsin-Madison are eligible. Applications are now available.

The Hispanic Latino Alumni Association awards scholarships each year to current or incoming Hispanic/Latino students. To qualify for an HLAA scholarship you must be either enrolled at UW-Madison full-time (carrying a minimum of 12 credits) or a high school senior. Students who will be receiving their bachelor's degrees by May of the year of application are ineligible for this scholarship. The 2008-09 applications are due May 20, 2008.

Since 1967, WAA's alumni chapters around the world have awarded nearly $6 million to UW-Madison students. The program, developed by WAA and funded by the UW Foundation, matches donations from local alumni and friends. Scholarships are generally awarded in the spring, but each chapter operates its own scholarship program, so find the chapter nearest your hometown to find out more about its program.
